What is Sedation Dentistry?
Dental anxiety can turn even minor dental treatments into daunting and fear-inducing experiences. At Smiles 4 Keeps, we understand these concerns, and that’s why we offer sedation dentistry to create a comfortable and relaxing environment for your family’s dental care. There are four levels of sedation dentistry, each catering to different needs and comfort levels.
If dental work makes you anxious or you’re worried about your or your child’s upcoming appointment, we are here to help. Our experienced team at Smiles 4 Keeps provides sedation dentistry services that can ease your anxiety and ensure a more relaxed experience.
The Four Levels of Sedation Dentistry
Four levels of sedation dentistry are available:
Level 1
Mild/Minimal Sedation: This level involves the use of nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” mixed with oxygen. It allows the patient to remain awake and alert during the procedure while promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety. The effects wear off quickly, making it suitable for both children and adults. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask.
Level 2
Moderate Sedation: Administered orally in pill form, moderate sedation is slightly stronger than nitrous oxide. While the patient will still be conscious during the procedure, it induces a deeper sense of relaxation, often resulting in partial memory loss of the procedure details.
Level 3
Deep Sedation/IV-Sedation: Deep sedation is administered intravenously (IV) and offers a state referred to as “twilight sleep.” During this state, the patient is on the edge of consciousness and less sensitive to pain. The patient remains awake throughout the procedure, (although the patient might appear to be sleeping) making it suitable for oral surgery procedures such as wisdom teeth extractions, dental implants, and gum surgery.
Level 4
General Anesthesia: General anesthesia is the most potent form of sedation, rendering you fully unconscious throughout the dental procedure.
The choice of sedation depends on various factors, including the type of procedure, your anxiety level, and your overall health. Prior to your appointment, our team at Smiles 4 Keeps will carefully discuss your options and recommend the most suitable sedation type tailored to your specific needs.
Please note that Level 4 – General Anesthesia is not currently available at our offices. Our pediatric dentists in Allentown have hospital privileges and can perform dentistry under general anesthesia in a hospital setting.
Sedation Dentistry for Children
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to prevent the patient from feeling overly nervous and anxious. It can be used before or during a procedure, and may be useful for any dental treatment, from a routine cleaning to a root canal.
It is important to note that sedation is not the same as being put to sleep (though your child may fall asleep during his or her procedure). Patients who are sedated remain conscious and are able to communicate with us the entire time. Many patients find that time seems to fly by when they are sedated and afterwards remember little about the appointment.
Our team members are very experienced in providing sedation for children. We have undergone extensive training to ensure that we are administering sedation in a safe and effective manner. Your child’s safety and comfort are extremely important to us!
Why Should I Consider Sedation for my child?
We use sedation in our office for several reasons:
- Sedation gives parents peace of mind. We understand how difficult it is to see your child upset and scared at the dentist’s office. It’s comforting to know that your child is at ease going into the appointment.
- In addition, the use of sedation makes it easier for our dentists to do the very best job possible. When we don’t have to worry about your child’s discomfort, we can focus 100 percent of our attention on the procedure.
- Most importantly, we use sedation because it makes the appointment easier for your child. We want your child to associate going to the dentist with positive feelings rather than fear and nervousness. The better your child’s experience at the dentist, the more likely he or she will be to continue visiting the dentist on a regular basis later in life.
Children’s Options for Sedation
The right type of sedation, if any, for your child will depend on multiple factors, including:
- The type of procedure
- Your child’s medical history
- Your child’s level of anxiety
Prior to your child’s appointment, we’ll discuss the options for sedation and determine which form will be appropriate.
We use three types of sedation in our office:
- Nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas, is often the choice used for minor procedures, such as fillings.
- Oral conscious sedation refers to taking medication prior to the appointment.
- IV sedation is typically reserved for invasive or complex procedures, such as oral surgery.
General Anesthesia can be administered in an hospital setting. Our oral surgeons at our Allentown office have hospital privileges and can offer oral surgery under anesthesia at an hospital outpatient facility in Allentown, PA.
